A magnificent Flemish Renaissance “beeldenkast” crafted in oak and originating from Antwerp around 1630. This type of cabinet, richly sculpted and monumental in presence, was traditionally used to display status, wealth, and craftsmanship; and this example embodies all the hallmarks of early‑17th‑century Antwerp carving ateliers.
The façade is adorned with exceptionally detailed sculptural work: deep reliefs, scrolling foliage, putti, and architectural motifs carved with remarkable precision. The side figures and drawer fronts show the characteristic virtuosity of the period, where cabinetmakers collaborated closely with sculptors to achieve this level of ornamentation.
The cabinet retains its historical grandeur while showing authentic signs of age and use. The upper drawers no longer have their key, and over the centuries the piece has undergone several restorations, including partial renewal of the back panel — a common and practical intervention for furniture of this age. These restorations are sympathetic and preserve the cabinet’s structural integrity without diminishing its artistic value.
