Sculptural pair of table candlesticks, crafted circa 1910 by Carl Deffner in Esslingen, Germany. This pair exemplifies the refined metalwork and progressive design ethos of the Jugendstil movement. Executed in red and yellow copper; a rare and visually arresting combination, the candlesticks reflect both the artisanal rigor of the Arts & Crafts tradition and the organic fluidity of Art Nouveau.

The Candleholders were hand-worked in red and yellow copper, with a warm, natural patina that accentuates the interplay of tones and textures. Each candlestick features a flared, perforated base that rises into four slender brass rods, topped with spherical joints supporting a horizontal copper vane. A curved copper strip arcs gracefully from base to top, adding both structural tension and lyrical movement. Though conceived as functional lighting objects, their sculptural presence and mechanical elegance suggest a dual role, as decorative objets and as expressions of early 20th-century design innovation.

Carl Deffner (active late 19th–early 20th century) was known for his precision metalwork and contributions to Jugendstil design. These candlesticks likely emerged from the fertile period around 1910, when German designers were blending the sinuous forms of Art Nouveau with the honest materials and craftsmanship championed by the Arts & Crafts movement.

The Jugendstil aesthetic, Germany’s answer to Art Nouveau, favored stylized natural forms, expressive geometry, and a rejection of industrial excess. These candlesticks embody that spirit: their biomorphic curves and exposed mechanical elements speak to a design language rooted in nature, structure, and artisanal pride.

Structurally sound and visually compelling. The copper surfaces show a rich patina with minor oxidation, enhancing their historic character. Some imperfections are visible on the underside, including surface wear and slight irregularities consistent with age and use. These do not affect stability or visual impact when displayed.
