Belgium / 1988 / chair / Maarten van Severen / model S88 / leather, canvas, metal / Mid-century

A low easy chair model S88 designed by Maarten Van Severen in 1988. This chair is constructed from steel, handpicked thick saddle leather and a canvas cushion. The rectangular leather sheet is perfectly fitted between the steel strips, sturdy but always retaining flexibility. A thick canvas cushion provides a comfortable seating height.

F88 is a very low easy chair, so low that you can place your glass of wine on the floor next to you. It also accentuates a woman’s legs. The curved leather back rest provides warmth and a sense of enclosure.

Maarten van Severen (1956 – 2005) was a Belgian furniture designer and an interior architect. His pieces are internationally renowned and appreciated because of the unique usage of materials, quality and finish. His designs are simple, clear and well thought-out.
They reflect his quest for perfection in form, detail and execution. He prefers to call himself a maximalist – someone who unstintingly devotes all his energy and resources to achieving the desired result, even if that ultimately and perhaps inevitable appears minimalist.
