An art nouveau “Palm” side table by Jacob and Joseph Kohn in bentwood. Designed in Vienna, Austria around 1910. The table top has a dark circled wear mark (see pictures)
This table contains a rectangular top and four legs in bentwood with openwork palm motif on the rim and engraved details on the legs. This geometric palm/plant motif was very popular and was produced by Kohn and Thonet in various backrest designs for chairs and sofas. Stylistically of the Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Brooklyn vintage spirit.
Kohn became one of the main competitors of Gebrüder Thonet (Brothers Thonet). He collaborated with many artists of the Wiener Werkstätte period including Josef Hoffmann, Gustave Siegel, Koloman Moser... designing many pieces. The Kohns' received a Spanish royal commission as purveyors to the Royal Household (Proveedor de la Real Casa). Their works are exhibited and collected by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna.
