A rare and characterful piece of French design history, this 1930s cast iron bistro table originates from the Louis Vuitton workshops, where functional objects were crafted with the same attention to detail and durability as the maison’s iconic travel goods. Its compact round top; made of early Bakelite in a warm, reddish‑brown tone, offers a beautiful contrast to the sculptural black cast‑iron base, whose tripod form provides both elegance and stability.
The Bakelite surface, smooth and subtly lustrous, reflects the innovative spirit of the interwar period, when new materials were embraced for their modernity and resilience. The cast‑iron base, marked REX with patent inscriptions, adds industrial charm and authenticity, grounding the table in the craftsmanship of early 20th‑century France.
Louis Vuitton partnered with the Rex company to produce quality bistro tables in limited quantities in the 1930s. Louis Vuitton designed many furniture pieces for restaurants in the 1930s, and also a few for the Orient Express.
A beautifully preserved and evocative object from the 1930s, full of history, character, and understated elegance.
